« En mai 1995, à l’initiative de la Fédération des femmes du Québec (FFQ), quelques 850 femmes marchèrent pendant dix jours à travers le Québec pour réclamer des mesures pour éliminer la pauvreté. La présence de femmes du Sud suggère à deux québécoise, Françoise David et Diane Matte, l’idée d’une marche Mondiale des Femmes en l’an 2000. La MMF est alors constituée en 1996, moment où la Fédération des femmes du Québec amorçait un vaste mouvement en proposant aux groupes de femmes du monde entier d’entreprendre, pour l’an 2000, une action concertée contre la pauvreté et la violence envers les femmes. » La marche débute le 8 mars et se termine le 17 octobre 2000 (source).
